About arenaflex – Shaping the Future of Retail Through Data

arenaflex is on a mission to help people save money so they can live better. This purpose drives every decision we make, from the way we source products to the way we design technology that powers the world’s largest retail ecosystem. As a global leader in retail, arenaflex leverages massive data volumes to create real‑time insights, drive operational efficiency, and deliver personalized experiences to millions of customers every day. Our culture is built on curiosity, innovation, and a relentless focus on the customer – and we need the brightest data talent to turn raw data into strategic advantage.

Why This Role Matters

The Senior Data Modeler – Data Ventures sits at the heart of arenaflex’s data engineering organization. You will be the architect of the data foundations that enable data engineers, scientists, analysts, and business leaders to extract value from petabytes of retail data. Your models will power everything from inventory optimization and pricing strategy to AI‑driven recommendation engines that shape the shopping experience for billions of customers worldwide.

Key Responsibilities

  • Strategic Data Modeling: Partner with application development, data engineering, and business stakeholders to design, build, and maintain conceptual, logical, and physical data models that support batch, streaming, and interactive workloads.
  • Best‑Practice Architecture: Create and enforce naming conventions, metadata standards, and modeling guidelines that ensure consistency, high data quality, and ease of reuse across the enterprise.
  • Technology‑Agnostic Solutions: Develop models optimized for relational, dimensional, and NoSQL databases, including MPP platforms, Hadoop ecosystems, Cloud data warehouses (e.g., BigQuery, Snowflake), and emerging graph stores.
  • Model Evolution & Optimization: Continuously refine existing models, perform reverse engineering of legacy schemas, and identify opportunities for model consolidation and performance improvement.
  • Collaboration & Guidance: Mentor system analysts, engineers, and programmers on model capabilities, limitations, and performance considerations; act as the go‑to expert for data‑related integration challenges.
  • Quality Assurance: Validate business data objects for accuracy, completeness, and alignment with business rules; conduct variance analysis and resolve discrepancies between logical designs and physical implementations.
  • Innovation Enablement: Work closely with data scientists to understand emerging analytical needs, translate them into robust data structures, and support rapid prototyping of machine‑learning pipelines.
  • Documentation & Governance: Maintain comprehensive documentation of data models, lineage, and metadata; contribute to data governance initiatives that protect data integrity and compliance.

Essential Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, Engineering, or a related discipline (or equivalent practical experience).
  • 10+ years of hands‑on experience designing and implementing data warehouse models at scale (100 TB+ environments).
  • Deep expertise in data modeling techniques: 3NF, dimensional (star/snowflake), and hybrid approaches.
  • Proven track record with MPP, relational, and NoSQL technologies such as Hive, SQL Server, Hadoop, Cassandra, Google BigQuery, Snowflake, and similar platforms.
  • Strong understanding of data integration patterns, ETL/ELT processes, and data pipeline orchestration.
  • Excellent communication skills with the ability to influence cross‑functional teams and translate technical concepts into business value.
  • Experience working in globally distributed, collaborative environments.

Preferred Qualifications & Additional Skills

  • Master’s degree or Ph.D. in Computer Science, Data Engineering, or a related field.
  • Experience in retail, supply‑chain, e‑commerce, or healthcare domains, providing context for industry‑specific data challenges.
  • Hands‑on experience with cloud‑native data services (e.g., AWS Redshift, Azure Synapse, GCP BigQuery) and containerized data workloads.
  • Familiarity with data governance frameworks, data catalog tools, and privacy regulations (e.g., GDPR, CCPA).
  • Proficiency in scripting languages (Python, Bash) and data‑definition languages (DDL/DML) for automated model deployment.
  • Demonstrated ability to lead technical workshops, mentor junior modelers, and drive community of practice initiatives.

Core Competencies for Success

  • Analytical Mindset: Ability to dissect complex business problems and translate them into scalable data structures.
  • Detail Orientation: Meticulous attention to data integrity, naming conventions, and documentation.
  • Collaboration: Strong partnership skills with engineers, scientists, product owners, and business leaders.
  • Adaptability: Comfort working in a fast‑moving environment where priorities shift based on market dynamics.
  • Leadership: Capacity to influence without authority, champion best practices, and drive continuous improvement.
