ASSISTANT DIRECTOR OF THE LIBRARY DEPT: LIBRARY ADMINISTRATION FT/PT/TEMP: FULL TIME EXEMPT STATUS: EXEMPT REPORTS TO: DIRECTOR OF THE LIBRARY Brief Description: The Assistant Director of the Library works to ensure the proper functioning of the David Allan Hubbard Library and assists the Director of the Library. The Assistant Director is a member of the library’s administration team that also includes the Head of Cataloging and Archivist. The Assistant Director oversees the library’s public services, including circulation staff and reference librarians. They also serve as Reference Librarians, assisting students, faculty, and classes in information literacy and effectively utilizing research resources. Public Services Management

  • Provides visioning and oversight of the library’s reference and information literacy services
  • Oversee and evaluate the delivery of reference services, including in-person, phone, chat, and email assistance.
  • Manages all front desk and circulation responsibilities carried out by library staff
  • Supervise and coordinate all library staff with public service responsibilities
  • Supervise the day-to-day operations of the circulation desk
  • Update and maintain public services policy and standard operating procedures
  • Provide assistance to patrons who require assistance from reference librarians and interlibrary loan services
  • Collaborate with faculty to develop and deliver information literacy instruction, including course-integrated sessions and workshops.
  • Other duties as assigned

General Library Management

  • Oversee library staff to ensure the smooth day to day operation of the library
  • Represent the library in various campus wide meetings
  • Contribute to the library’s strategic planning, aligning reference services with academic programs and institutional goals.
  • Approve timecards, sick time, and vacation schedules for appropriate Library personnel
  • Coordinate the annual and regular performance appraisal process for direct reporting library staff
  • Responsible for library building management in collaboration with Director of Library and relevant Fuller departments

Work Environment:

  • The David Allan Hubbard Library is located in Pasadena, California and is part of the Fuller Theological Seminary campus. All responsibilities and work must be carried out in-person at the library located in Pasadena. Occasional travel may be necessary for conferences, training, and consortia meetings.

Availability Requirements:

  • The typical workweek for this role is Monday-Friday, 8 hours a day, with an average of 40 hours a week, but with some flexibility to adjust hours as needed including working on Saturdays and evenings.

Knowledge and Skills Required and Preferred:

  • A Master’s of Library and Information Science (MLIS) or Master’s of Library Science (MLS) degree required
  • A second Master’s Degree in theology or psychology is preferred
  • Fluency in English is required
  • Second language fluency in Korean or Spanish preferred
  • 2+ years of managing teams in a library context is required, 4+ years preferred
  • Experience working in an academic, research, or special library with leadership or managerial responsibilities preferred
  • Demonstrated success in working with diverse populations and commitment to public service required
  • Excellent computer and library technology skills are required
  • Familiarity of instructional video creating and editing required
  • Experience using Slack and Google Workspace is preferred
  • Ability to create and organize data and information systems is required
  • The ability to communicate professionally on the in person and in written form is required
  • A commitment to confidentiality in line with the library profession is expected

Pay Scale

  • Salary the seminary expects to pay: $68,000 - $70,000 annually
